The transition from physical software sales to digital downloads has happened quickly to say the least, but last year’s pandemic pushed more consumers than ever towards the PS Store. Of the 338.9 million PlayStation 5 and PS4 games sold during the fiscal year ending 31st March, 2021, an incredible 220 million were downloaded.
That means that around 65 per cent of PlayStation’s overall game sales were purchased through the PS Store, which is up significantly year-over-year, from 53 per cent. Obviously, as alluded to previously, coronavirus has helped to accelerate this transition – but the industry has already been heading this way for some time.
In fact, when you include add-on content such as microtransactions and subscription services like PS Plus, an eye-watering 69 per cent of PlayStation’s overall revenue was driven by the PS Store. To put this into perspective, the remaining 31 per cent consisted of hardware sales, accessories, and boxed games. In all, a minuscule five per cent of the division’s overall revenue can be attributed to physical software.
Of course, some consumers are worried that by purchasing digital they could potentially lose access to their software in the future. Sony announced plans to close the PS3 and PS Vita storefronts recently, before reversing the decision after a few days. It’s important to note that, had it gone ahead with its plans, fans still would have been able to download any titles they’d bought in the past.

As always this article lacks context whilst making conclusions. Is this including digital only? Is this including ps plus? How many were down to low sales? Only way you can really draw any conclusion would be to compare week one sales of a high profile release and compare digital to physical.
For me, second-hand resell prices and low physical stock have urged my recent digital purchases as well.
Alright! I guess my fear of losing my access to my digital catalog is somehow logical (if this is the right word) and as to why, we all know that someday we will lose access to the internet and all, depends on life situations.
I still prefer physical copies; they make me comfortable and happy just by looking at them and man, it has become hard during these tumultuous times to get copies on launch day. Like I have to wait weeks to get them.
I just don't get it and this has to be mostly in the discount sales.
I recently bought Outriders physical for £44, finished it and then sold it for £38. Therefore it cost me £6. Why would I buy it digital at £60?
@Robinsad This is just about financials not comparing games. 1) it including all games able to be purchased by PlayStation physical or digital. From April's 2020- March 2021 2)"In fact, when you include add-on content such as microtransactions and subscription services like PS Plus, an eye-watering 69 per cent of PlayStation’s overall revenue was driven by the PS Store."3) we don't know how many are because of sale as it talk about money made and sale help them make money.
The take away is 2/3 of consumer are willing to buy from PS store. Meaning more money for PlayStation as they don't have to pay a 1/3 to retail.
Having a digital only PlayStation 5 probably helped with these figures.
Imagine the possibilities though if the store was better to use?
I only buy digital if the games cheap or isn't available on physical. Been buying physical copies online had some great deals on older games I have wanted for the collection. Cant stand the thought of paying 60 quid or more on digital. Cant sell or trade digital.
I prefer physical.
You can resell it or lend it to a friend. Also, if the servers go down, the game is still yours to keep.
I'd be interested to see the digital numbers for ps5
This also would not count used games purchased.
Seeing as though digital buyers are saving the planet, one game at a time, you'd think we'd be rewarded in some way for our heroic deeds...
When you consider the second hand market, physical is still likely ahead.
@RenanKJ In the long term it probably would, but not so much right now as there still far more many people buying software for PS4.
@RenanKJ I have a disc drive PS5 and haven't bought a single physical game, you know the old saying of is better to have something and not need it. I think as I've gotten older I can't be bothered to swap discs around so laziness is pushing me digital 🤷
Missleading article. As same as to say "respirators became most popular product of 2020" while forgetting to mention people are FORCED to buy them by governments and laws. This is same story here. These statistics have no weight.
I even pre ordered returnal physical through Amazon
I really hope digital market doesnt dictate less physical copies being printed. It makes me mad when japanese developers and publishers dont make physical discs for the west thinking physical wont sell.
Yesss, because everyone I know before the pandemic still walked into stores and politely asked the clerk if they can unlock the glass cage that the game discs are being held prisoner in... such a fun experience that was!
The discount are too good in this digital market, while I usually buy full priced games physical, I have bought a lot of discounted digital games on psn/steam.
Digital is more convenient, but around 3 times more expensive than physical due to no second hand or used digital licenses and an inability to resell. If Sony had a digital trade back policy then I’d get everything digitally without question.
I remember when complete games used to be released physically. Now we mostly have nothing but companies releasing half-baked versions of games and patching them out with downloads that won't always be available (in theory) down the road.
I always buy digital if I can. I don't want a disc taking up space in the house, I like being able to switch between multiple games without faffing about with a disc and it's quieter. And I'd never sell a game on, because I like to replay them.
@Gunnerzaurus not really, the numbers are all over the place, the 65% is based on number downloaded not money, and when they talk money they throw subscriptions and micro transactions in to inflate the the value. Which suggests to me the physical is actually outselling but this is massaging the figures?
Physical all the way. No risk of losing access. Unless my house burns down.
🔥🏠🔥
The only thing that makes me mad, is why a digital game is the same cost as a physical game.
No disc, no box, no paper and I guess no shop cut on sale.
If a new PS5 game release is £70 in shop day one the same digitally should be £60.
Out of principal they are scamming us bad.
Lets get trapped in 1 store where publishers can keep their games at $70 regardless of demand.
Good luck with that.
Only real incentive I have to buy games on console over PC is that I can rent, sell or buy them used and save some cash.
If going Digital only - I'll always pick PC.
@KippDynamite Same here ill stay physical as long as its possible. And really i can order physical games online so why even bother to go digital.
🤪 👍
I almost exclusively buy digital now. The only exceptions are new releases that I want to try but am unsure of (like someone above, I bought Outriders physical, played it for a couple of weeks, and sold it). But generally I wait for a decent sale on digital games that I'm interested in. Less physical space taken on shelves, no swapping discs, no handling of discs by my 11 year old.
**Gasp** - Sony started the pandemic on purpose!
*In fact, when you include add-on content such as microtransactions and subscription services like PS Plus, an eye-watering 69 per cent of PlayStation’s overall revenue was driven by the PS Store.
Sorry but this says nothing and again digital stuff is not available physical. If they will give us the numbers where you have both options then i can say there is a shift.
Physical whenever possible, unless the price is exorbitantly higher.
Another meaningless article that fails to mention that many games are digital only and F2P games that purely rely on macrotransactions (not a typo).
Why not specify that 100% of PS4/PS5 hardware were sold as physical versions? It would make as much sense as this article.
Where can I find out as to what game is digital only on both PS4 and PS5?
I only buy digital. It's much more convenient, and I'm at the point where downloading a game is the same speed or faster than installing it.
@Gunnerzaurus 65% is quantity of games downloaded. That could mean anything. Hence my questions as to what’s included in that. Then when they go on to talk about revenue they include subscriptions and micro transactions. This seems disingenuous. If they hadn’t included money from micro transactions and subscriptions would physical have been ahead?
I'm not surprised at all, sadly physical sales will eventually become extinct...even I'm starting to buy new games digitally.
@lolwhatno
Whatever troll u got nothing better to do.
